Urban land -
Connection to the cities

North Lippe in East Westphalia. A rural region, typical of so many sparsely populated areas in Germany: with a lot of quiet, a lot of space - and a lot of "but". But there is hardly any public transport! But without a car, we're screwed! But the railroad has shut down the line! So that the country does not lose its connection, it must remain mobile - for more quality of life and more economy.

With this goal in mind, four lead projects for networked, autonomous mobility services in public rail and road transport were developed by the OWL University of Applied Sciences as part of REGIONALE 2022. One of them, the AutoBAHN project, is aimed at a prototypical autonomous rail transport from Lemgo via Dörentrup to Barntrup. The Landeseisenbahn Lippe e. V., which won the German Mobility Award in 2018 with an unusual idea, was then added as a project partner: the MONOCAB.

The MONOCAB is a self-propelled cabin on the rails of the historic single-track railroad line between Lemgo and Extertal. And not just one: Because there will be many of them running in both directions on one track - at the same time! Because MONOCAB runs stereo thanks to gyroscope technology: as a gyro-stabilized monorail. This is nothing newfangled, but from 1907. The MONOCABs can run in continuous circulation like a paternoster - and be ordered like cabs for individual trips to the village or the city. Simply by app, around the clock, 365 days a year. Individual, automated, on demand, but with abundance - as IPNV, the individual local passenger transport. So that people in the countryside become more mobile and independent.

This idea has now received new impetus. In a network of many partners who develop solutions for the technical challenges: MONOCAB OWL! On board are the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences, the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, the Landeseisenbahn Lippe e. V., Fraunhofer Lemgo and the district of Lippe - so that the idea gets on the rails. MONOCAB OWL combines automated driving by gyro-stabilized monorail, a historic rail line, a volunteer enterprise and a regional network to create a means of transportation for the future in rural areas: a public yet individual railroad. In 2022, the first prototype is to make its way and prove the feasibility of the concept. Welcome to UrbanLand Ostwestfalen-Lippe.
